Thermal Soaring – glide like an Andean condor
The Andean condor has a wingspan of 3–3.5 metres and is one of the largest flying birds in the world. It can hang like a black sail against the sky over the Andes, barely moving its wings.
The secret is thermals: the sun warms the ground and the rocks, and the warm air rises like an invisible column. The condor circles in it and is lifted up. Scientists measured that condors flap their wings only about 1% of the time they fly – one condor flew for more than 5 hours and about 172 km without a single wingbeat.
Eagleworld's own Andean condor is called Molina. In the flying game »Thermal Soaring« you can try soaring like her.
How to play
- The condor slowly sinks as it glides. Find a thermal – look for shimmer in the air and white clouds.
- Hold down to circle in the warm air. You climb.
- You only have five wingbeats. How far can you soar before sunset?
Tip: On a phone you can circle by tilting it sideways.
